New university name details (tentative name)

University Name

Tokyo University of Science (English notation: Institute of Science Tokyo)

Abbreviation

University of Science (English name: currently being adjusted)

Reason for decision

The purpose of the integration of the two universities is to create a new type of university that no other university has been able to achieve before while leveraging the tradition and innovation of both universities. We chose the name to express our vision and direction.

In particular, the basic agreement states that the new university will “further promote cutting-edge research at both universities,” “collaborate across departments to develop “convergence science,”” and “create a vision for the future based on integrated knowledge.” “We will produce highly specialized human resources who will pioneer the future” and “A culture of diversity, inclusion, and fairness that will foster innovation.” To make these things a reality, we must develop “science” that includes not only the traditional specialized fields of both universities, uncharted territory born from free ideas and dialogue but also humanities and social science perspectives. It becomes the driving force. We wanted the name to express the strong will that the new university will take on the future development of science and carve out a vibrant future together with society.

We also want to be a university that attracts more diverse people than ever before, including not only those who seek to pursue science and create new value but also those who are broadly interested in science. I also think so.

Furthermore, to continue our efforts to have science recognized as a part of culture, and to gain the understanding and expectations of society, we chose “science” that is familiar and easy to remember.

The first part of the name will continue to be “Tokyo” as before. This indicates that the university is based in Tokyo, the capital of Japan and an international city.

Discussion background

In deciding on the name of the new university, a name consideration working group (hereinafter referred to as WG) was established under the Integration Preparation Committee, which examines matters necessary for the integration of both universities and was organized by an equal number of members from both universities to hold discussions. I did. In selecting the members of the working group, we took into account multiple occupations (teachers, students, administrative staff, URA, medical professionals), gender ratio, age balance, and internationalism (nationality, English proficiency). In addition, proposals were accepted on the websites of both universities from Friday, November 25, 2022, to Thursday, December 8, 2022, and over 6,000 proposals were received. Based on the results of the working group’s discussions concerning the proposals received, the integration preparatory committee will discuss the name of the new university as one that aligns with the purpose of the integration and the organizational culture that the new university aims for. The decision was made after deliberation. We would like to express our deep gratitude to everyone who cooperated with the proposal.

Please note that the name is provisional until it goes through future procedures at the University Establishment and Educational Corporation Council and amendments to the National University Corporation Law (deliberations in the Diet), and may change based on procedures such as trademark registration.
